US Officials attempting to Block Voyager Sale Again, Report Shows

According to an exclusive report from the Wall Street Journal, United States officials are once again trying to halt the sale of the Voyager spacecraft to a wealthy private collector. The proposed sale has been fraught with controversy since its announcement in April, with many U.S. government figures arguing that it could imperil national interests and compromise state secrets.

The spacecraft was a pioneering model of interplanetary exploration, and served as a platform for a range of scientific discoveries conducted during its three-year mission. The private collector is willing to pay $27 million for the Voyager, a sum which the U.S. government has sought to intercept in order to preserve the craft and its secrets. Since then, a number of legal challenges have been raised allowing the prospective sale to reach its final stages before being blocked.

At present, the controversial sale looks set to go ahead after an appeals court ruling that the U.S. Department of Defense failed to demonstrate why the sale is illegal under current law. However, The Wall Street Journal reports that government officials have re-filed the courtroom defence with even stronger evidence, and are still attempting to step in.

This move has sparked outrage from certain organisations, who argue that the sale should be allowed to happen. Supporters of the sale indicate that private ownership would ensure the spacecraft is placed in the hallowed surrounds of a museum, giving wider audiences access to the history and discoveries of the pioneering journey into space. They also say that the money from the sale would go towards vital scientific research, something which the government often does not invest in.

The legal battle around Voyager’s sale has been an intense one, with both sides of the argument evenly matched in court. With the government seemingly determined to block the sale and the buyer determined to proceed, whether or not the spacecraft will be privately owned remains inconclusive.
